elkhound qualities

Post by michael on Tue May 13, 2008 5:21 pm

Hi,
I have recently discovered the Norwegian Elkhounds and am researching their temperment to ensure that they are the right dog for me. Are Elkhounds able to be let off the leash at all? i have read that huskies will run at the first opportunity and was wondering wether Elkhounds would do the same. Would i require a 6 foot fence to keep them in?
Also, i will have small children and a golden retrevier off the same age would there be a problem?
your advice would be appreciated
cheers
michael

Hello michael,

We have bred an elkhound who went to victoria, he runs freely on the beach and even goes surfing.
We live in a rural property with 4 foot rural fences with no problem.

Most of the elkhound ownes here have other breeds of dogs, for instence, one has an Afgahn and a Hamilton, another has Cocker spaniels, one has Shiba inus, we have a kelpy cross one even has Vallahunds. One member recently has brought a golden lab to keep their elkhound company and one member has a little papillion and toy poodle. They are also great with children of all ages. Some members here do have young children between the ages of 1 and 3.
The temperment of the elkhound is great and they do pick things up very easy.

Hope this helps with your resarch.

Kelly (Halgrove)
